I Love When I Hear God Right in the Middle of the Ordinary
(Inside: I love when I hear God right in the middle of the ordinary. Moms can hear God move in our hearts through simple, normal moments. Read on…)
And right there in my kitchen, I felt God’s voice move through my heart.
The day was normal, a flurry of busy…
Breakfast.
Getting the kids off to school.
Work.
Home.
Asking kids about their day.
Organizing the evening activities.
Assessing the homework situation.
Making dinner.
Family around the table.
My chair squeaked against the floor as I grabbed my plate and headed to the sink.
I unleashed the warm water down my dish, my thoughts then interrupted by my youngest son’s laugh. I turned my head and saw my husband and our three boys cackling over a joke, lingering over dinner, clearly enjoying each other’s company.
Our family’s not perfect. We’re just like everyone else: we get cranky, aren’t always careful with our words, and can’t consistently manage to put our clothes in the actual laundry basket.
But, at that moment, I didn’t see any of that.
Instead, it felt like God opened my eyes for the first time all the hectic, ordinary day to see – really see – my people. This blessing. This thing I’d prayed for my whole life.
He took me back to my early twenties, years that are supposed to be fun, yet I found them hard and confusing and full of anxiety and more anxiety. I remembered how after being bridesmaid after bridesmaid, I’d gotten on my knees and asked God for my own family, my greatest desire.
And right there in my kitchen, I felt God’s voice move through my heart, whispering…
I heard you.
Not only that, I know you.
I see you.
And, most of all, I’m always, always, always for you.
My child whom I love so much and then some more.
Those loved ones right there, they’re just for you.
I held God’s words in my heart for just a sliver of a second and let them fill me up, then put my plate in the dishwasher, feeling grateful.
