There’s Just Something About Being a Mom of Big Kids
(Inside: Being a mom of big kids has its mountaintops and valleys and everything in between. But what a great season of life it is…)
There’s just something about being a mom of big kids.
Discovering new depths to love: oceans of fierce protectiveness, a strong teether that binds us to our babies, an ability to find hope in their situations over and over like waves hitting the shore. The connection between a mom and her kids is unique, powerful, and gorgeous.

Growing up alongside our kids. Perspective shifting. Mindset getting healthier. Faith strengthening. Not really caring less, but better knowing what to care about and learning to let the other things go.
There’s just something about being a mom of big kids.
The holy experience of getting to pour into people. Teaching them how loved they are by God. Nourishing them with encouragement. Then helping them learn routines and how to navigate this world.
There’s just something about being a mom of big kids.
Watching your kids grow into themselves. It happens in our normal – missing assignments, acing papers, eye-rolls, not making teams, getting jobs, and just-keep-going moments – it all points to what works. Slowly, interests unearth and confidence emerges like stars after dusk.
There’s just something about being a mom of big kids.
The sheer exhaustion and mental overload. You think you can’t keep moving forward, then a tiger-like strength claws its way to the surface, and you do. When you stop and really notice all you juggle, you can’t help but be amazed. And much more empowered to ask for help or just pick up pizza because that’s what you’d recommend to anyone else in your shoes.
There’s just something about being a mom of big kids.
Getting to use your creativity, organization, and intellect in bringing your family together. Listening. Problem solving. Conversations. Prayers. Apologies. Hugs. Promoting kindness. Teaching that everyone matters, everyone contributes. Through ups and downs, you are a leader in shaping a home.
There’s just something about being a mom of big kids.
Arriving at how to have grace on yourself. Discovering that you can be type-A, high energy, and still will make mistakes (daily, hourly), so you FINALLY believe that flawless isn’t real. You stop chasing that goal and learn to love your imperfect, messy life.

Ordinary.
And everything in between.
Covered with so much love.
