As a Mom of a Senior, My Heart Hurts, but It’s a Good Thing

Senior year.

I guess I shouldn’t have blinked.

Because here I stand in this journey with you, my new high school senior.

And – I’m not going to lie – my heart aches.

So many lasts about to unfold.

Last first day of school.

School pictures.

Homecoming week.

Crashing through our door to tell us about your school day.

Friends coming over after the game.

Schoology messages, emails, refilling your lunch account, and checking grades.

Seeing you in a school uniform.

Parent-teacher conferences.

Band concerts.

Prom.

And other activities.

Last year of you living full-time in our home.

You are such a gift to us all; you make our family whole. We know you need to soar, but we can’t imagine letting you go. Your continual presence will be missed.

My heart hurts, but it’s not for negative reasons.

It’s because I was all in, loving you with wild abandon.

But I can’t imagine any other way to mother.

I don’t regret one second of loving you so hard.

Even if it means I stand at the start of senior year with an ache.
