start of a school year

Why the Start of a School Year is a Great Place to Be

(Inside: The start of a school year is a great place to be, and here are all of the reasons why. Happy first day of school!)

I love the first day of a new school year.

Especially for our middle and high schoolers.

How nice to have a fresh start.

To walk into the school with renewed confidence. It’s going to be a ride, but head held high, shoulders back, you’re created in God’s image, so move through the day like the loved person you are.

To dominate your schoolwork. Boss those assignments around because you are strong, capable, and know how to find help when needed. Put effort in, and you’ll get some solid results.

To get involved. Be the joiner, new things and/or that sport you’ve played since you were a toddler, just keep pursuing places to use your talents and learn more about what you’re good at.

To make friends. You are a gift and there are kids in the building who need a friend exactly like you. Find them. Chat with people in class, say yes to the after-school board game club, notice and talk to the quiet kids, invite people to meet you at the game, whatever. Reach out and you’ll meet some great people.

To embrace a healthy attitude. School can be fun, get into it and see what happens. Start noticing the 50 things that went right about your day, instead of the 2 things that did not. Know life won’t be perfect. Ever. So let that idea go. Embrace curiosity over stress.

As a high school teacher, I love the energy of the first day of school.

Yes, there are nerves and worry, but there are also
best-foot forwards,
hope-filled anticipation,
renewed determination,
and a lot of grace on each other.

It feels like a sunrise,

a second chance,
a blank canvas,
and God’s grace all wrapped up together.

Of course, the year won’t be all smooth sailing (it never is), but one day at a time. For right this second, it simply feels good to have our toes up against the edge of a fresh start, full of hope.

Happy start of a new school year, everyone.
