Talk to Your Big Kids about Everything, You Mean the World to Them

(Inside: Talk to your big kids. Parents, your kids want to connect with you. You mean the absolute world to them. Talk to your big kids.)

Talk to your big kids.

Talk to them about everything

No matter how big or small the subject is, put it on the table…

friendships,
pressures they’re feeling,
hot topics,
how the world is changing and what they think about it,
activities and jobs,
classes and schoolwork,
organization and routines,
sex and dating and body,
drugs and alcohol,
driving,
integrity,
cell phones and social media,
favorite shows and best food,
faith and seeing God,
and every little thing, no matter how embarrassing or uncomfortable.

Ask them questions like…

What’s working right now?
How are things hard?
In life, what’s surprising you?
When are you confident?
What do you feel certain of?
Are there areas you’re questioning?

Parents, you are the most important people in your kids’ lives. Their hearts long to have a connection with you.

Hard stop.

They want you to hear them. To ask, make the time, persistently pursue them, and get to know them.

And they also want to know you. Your stories, your hearts, your knowledge, they long to hear it.

So, in the car ride, over dinner, a few minutes here, a few seconds there, invite conversation.

Our teens might shrug, eye roll, or ignore, but that is what being a teen is going to sometimes look like. We can’t control the outcome; however, we can decide to not take any teen apathy personally and create a home that nourishes open conversations.

So, talk to your big kids.

Talk to them about everything.
