My Big Kid: When Life is Tough, Remember Your Roots and Home
(Inside: When life is tough, draw comfort from your roots. My big kid, I hope your thoughts always bring you home to where you’re loved.)
Dear Big Kid,
I hope you always find your way home.
When you’re making your way through this world, I pray it all goes well. But, inevitably, when you feel the clouds gather and the winds stir up debris, spiraling negativity through your brain, I hope your thoughts always bring you back home.
When life is disappointing…
Didn’t get the minutes in the game? We love you. Someone posted something unkind involving you? We love you. Friend ghosted you? We love you. Test grade tanked? We love you. No matter what pain shakes you, I hope you bring your thoughts home and hear us tell you we love you.
When messages mess with your mind…
Peer pressure to act ridiculous? You know truth. Wanting to cut corners that will come back to bite you? You know truth. Hearing people tell you to turn here, but that gives you an uneasy feeling? You know truth. When life feels confusing, I hope you bring your thoughts home to what the healthy basics you’ve learned and let that ground you.
When it’s all too much…
Homework piled high? Come to our table and let me fix you a snack. Work pelting you with challenges? I want to hear all about it. Schedule crushing you? Let me flip your laundry. Depression bubbling? Let’s walk the dog around the lake together. Discouraged? I’ll fix you dinner. When your burden is heavy, I hope your brain nudges you to physically come home and recharge.
My big kid, I only wish the best for you.
I hope golden rays hit your skin just right. But, when thunder rolls and the winds gain steam, I hope your brain works through the pelting, unhelpful thoughts until you land on home.
Because we’re rooting for you.
And we’re always here.
