Your Kid is Launching But Not Today
(Inside: My kid is about to graduate and move out, and this one thought comforts me. Is your kid launching? Maybe this will help you too…)
My senior is graduating, and I have big feelings about it all.
I am arm wrestling the speed of time, and the flipping days are for sure winning.
Grad party planning.
College decisions.
Prom.
Ceremony invites.
So many last times.
Sunrise, sunset, flip, flip, flip.
I’ve swallowed rocks and the ache grows in my belly.
I don’t want my home to change. Our family is perfect as is, and I’m not ready for my oldest to leave.
So, I consciously take a deep breath.
Inhale.
Exhale.
And remind myself, “Yes, he’s leaving, but it’s not today.”
I have today.
I get to holler “goodbye, love you” to him as he walks out the door in the morning. And hear the thud of the dropped backpack signaling he’s home after school.
I get to be around for when he feels like chatting. And sit near him at dinner as we spin our spoons around spaghetti noodles covered with red sauce.
I get to be home in the evening as he switches the screen between games. And say prayers with him before bed.
When my emotions are too wild, knocking my perspective around, and sending the mom ache sharply down to my toes, I have to narrow my focus.
Yes, my son is leaving soon, but it’s not right now.
I have today. And I’m going to be grateful for that.
